Research backs up what many people feel by mid January.


Psychologists John Norcross and Dominic Vangarelli followed people who made New Year’s resolutions over time. Their longitudinal study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, found strong early commitment followed by steady decline. By two years out, only about 19 percent maintained their changes.


Another large study led by Richard Wiseman at the University of Bristol followed roughly 3,000 participants. Most felt confident on January 1. Most did not follow through by year’s end.

This step narrows focus so energy goes toward what matters most.


Choose a single priority needing your attention. Not five. Not one per week or quarter.

If I complete only one meaningful thing today, what makes tomorrow easier?


Research on goal success continues to show clear, specific actions outperform vague ambition.
